INTERNATIONAL ORDERS OF BAMBOO PLANTS ...

Can living bamboo plants be exported from Thailand?
  • Yes, we can export living bamboo plants, attached with phytosanitary certificate and invoice if required. We will follow your instructions.

Can living bamboo plants be imported into my country?
  • Every country has its own plant import regulations which can be very restrictive (e.g. USA) or very reasonable (e.g. Thailand). We have successfully exported living bamboo plants to the USA, so why not also to your country? Please read our guidelines on how to find out plant import regulations.

Are bamboo species endangered species, hence restricted by CITES?

Which bamboos do you offer for international shipping?
  • We offer (1) rooted bamboo plant divisions, comprising of rhizome and trimmed stem/branches with or without leaves, (2) undivided seedlings and seedling divisions, both with leaves, (3) somewhat rooted leptomorph rhizomes only, (4) pre-rooted culm cuttings and branch cuttings, and (5) non-rooted cuttings.
  • All rooted bamboo material, (1), (2), (3), and (4), is offered for international shipping as EXP1 and EXP2 plants. These bamboos are listed in the Bamboo Plants Catalog with their retail prices in Euro (EUR = €).
  • Non-rooted bamboo material is (5) cuttings, and caryopsis type of seeds. Cuttings can be provided from some species of Bambusa, and from a few species of Dendrocalamus. Offered cuttings are not listed in the Bamboo Plants Catalog; please inquire if interested in receiving cuttings. Seeds are listed separately; please see the Bamboo Seeds Catalog, along with specific Ordering Information.
  • EXP1 bamboos are small plants with thin culm diameter, or a few years old seedlings. Before dispatch date of shipping, the culm length will be trimmed to less than parcel size (or bubble envelope maximum size), most of the soil or medium in which the plant was grown will be shaken off or washed off (and in some cases replaced by moistened coir), number of leaves or leaf size will be reduced, the plants' rhizome and roots will be wrapped in plastic foil, and the whole plant will be put in a non-tightly closed plastic bag for transport. This treatment is shown in "Preparing Bamboos for Export". EXP1 bamboos are not capable for getting issued a Phytosanitary Certificate, and we strongly recommend to order EXP1 bamboos only if import is in accordance with the regulations of the destination country.
  • EXP2 bamboos are strong plants, usually with a culm diameter up to 6 cm. Before dispatch date of shipping, the culm length will be trimmed to less than 53 cm or 80 cm (except thin, bending culms) to fit with the cardboard size, all the soil or medium in which the plant was grown will be completely removed, leaves will be removed or leaf size reduced, the whole plant will be treated with a fungicide (only if specifically required), the plants' rhizome and roots will be wrapped in plastic foil, and the whole plant will be put in a non-tightly closed plastic bag for transport. The whole bare-root treatment is shown from photos step-by-step in "Preparing Bamboos for Export". For EXP2 bamboos, a Phytosanitary Certificate can get issued. Maximum quantity of EXP2 plants is about 100 plants per order.

Is there a minimum order required?
  • Minimum amount of money per order: No minimum is required.
  • Minimum quantity of plants per order: Minimum quantity is 1 plant, if not otherwise is stated in the Bamboo Plants Catalog.
  • Shipping and especially bare-root treatment cause much stress to living bamboo plants. Although we only select bamboos suitable for international shipment, re-cultivation upon arrival may not always be successful. We therefore recommend to order not less than 2-3 plants per wanted species/variety.

Which season do you ship bamboo plants abroad?
  • EXP1 plants can usually be shipped from April to November.
  • EXP2 plants can best be shipped from April to July, late shooting bamboos can be shipped until August.
  • Shipping to the northern Hemisphere from November to March could enhance the risk of weakening and damaging the plants (e.g. leaves and culms by cold weather, ceasing young shoots from stress).

Which mode of shipment is possible?
  • For living bamboo plants, we usually offer postal shipment to the receiver's address: registered airmail small packet up to 2 kg, registered airmail parcel up to 20 kg, or EMS package up to 20 kg. EMS is the fastest mode, which is most recommended for shipment of living plants.
  • Air cargo service (shipment to certain airport destinations).
  • If the importer wishes shipment to be executed by another carrier (e.g. UPS, FedEx, DHL), then the importer has to choose the carrier and settle prepaid shipment order in his country in advance, and the Shipment Waybill sent to us.

What are the postage rates?

What are the handling charges?
  • There are no extra charges for handling, plant treatment for export, packing material etc. Our EXP1 and EXP2 prices are calculated to include all these costs.

Do bamboos need to be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate?
  • This depends on the plant import regulations of the destination country.
  • We can arrange to get a Phytosanitary Certificate (issued by the Chiang Mai Plant Quarantine Station) for bare-rooted bamboos only. We charge for this service 1,900 THB per shipment (containing one package to be shipped). The documentation of the Phytosanitary Certificate will be inside the package, or attached outside if explicitly required.

What about availability of bamboos for export?
  • Please see from the Bamboo Plants Catalog. If a retail price is quoted for EXP1 or EXP2 bamboos, then they are available at the date given in brackets. If no EXP1 or EXP2 price is quoted, then plants are not available for export, or not expected to be available within this season. If plants for export are available, then usually in low number.
  • Please inquire by email if you need further details.

What are the prices of bamboos for export?
  • Bamboos for export are EXP1 or EXP2 bamboos. Their retail prices are quoted in Euro (EUR = €) in the Bamboo Plants Catalog, and these export prices are not equivalent to the prices in Thai Baht (THB = ฿) for purchase at nursery.
  • If prices are roughly quoted in the Catalog, we will send you a quotation with exact prices.

How to place an order?
  • We accept orders by email.
  • Upon receipt of your order, we shall send you a quotation or proforma invoice by email attachment.

Mode of payment?
  • Purchase orders must be prepaid not later than the expiry date stated on the quotation.
  • Accepted modes of payment are bank transfer to a bank in Thailand or in the EU, and transfer via PayPal or Moneybookers.

Instead of shipping bamboos abroad: Is it possible to visit the Nursery, select and buy, treat, pack, and carry away the bamboos by myself?
  • Yes it is. You can then purchase the bamboos at the lower price in Thai Baht (THB = ฿).
  • We can provide you accommodation, which is located on the same property as the Bamboo Nursery.
  • We can provide transfer service from the Chiang Mai Airport to the Nursery at Baan Sammi.
  • You can select the bamboos, treat them for export (get off the soil), trim and pack them by yourself.
  • Or you can hire a gardener for half or whole day to do all or part of the work.
  • We can assist in getting a Phytosanitary Certificate if wanted.
  • We can arrange trips for visiting and viewing bamboo sites in Chiang Mai and its vicinity.
