About Us

Bambusetum Baan Sammi

Baan Sammi Nature Retreat and Bambusetum is located in the countryside, about 15 km northeast of the city of Chiang Mai. The property of Baan Sammi comprises 4 rai (about 7,000 sqm) only, and includes several small houses in a natural environment of lush tropical vegetation in which bamboo is a major landscape feature.

For the design of the property with its houses, ponds, ditches, trees, bamboos and other vegetation, general garden design principles of the English Landscape Garden and the Japanese Edo excursion-style garden were freely adopted, with as little interference in natural growth of tall trees as possible. The houses are a blend of (northern-Thai) Lanna style (chiefly for roof design) and Western cottage design (chiefly for brick-work).

Our living bamboo collection comprises about 150 different bamboo species and varieties, all have been planted out, and a further 250 were outsourced to Boonthammee Bamboo Garden and a few other gardens. As the garden is part of the resort area, we planted out only the most striking ornamental and feature bamboos, and some botanically rare and interesting bamboos. Most of the giant bamboos useful for shoot and timber production were planted out at Boonthammee Bamboo Garden.

Viewing our garden and bamboos, and getting information, is possible (to a single person, or a group of up to 3 people) any day and daytime upon appointment. Please, notify us of date and approximate time of your intended visit several days in advance by email (not phone call), then date and time will be confirmed immediately by email in return. There is neither a garden entrance fee, nor an expectation that the visitor purchases plants/seeds. There are usually no sales at Baan Sammi; any bamboo seed order, or bamboo plant order, has to be directed or forwarded to Boonthammee Bamboo Garden.

There are two people. Baan Sammi Nature Retreat and Bambusetum is run by Khun Sam (Mr. Samran Apaipong), and horticultural and botanic information on bamboo will be provided by Khun Dieter of Bambusetum Baan Sammi.

Boonthammee Bamboo Garden

Boonthammee Bamboo Garden is located in Hang Dong District, about 10 km south of the city of Chiang Mai. The property comprises 3 rai (about 4,900 sqm or 1.2 acres) with a nursery and bamboo farm mainly for the production of bamboo shoots which are supplied as food raw material for restaurants and hotels in Chiang Mai.

In cooperation with Baan Sammi Bamboo Garden, we grow and propagate more than 300 different bamboo species/varieties, one of the most diverse bamboo collection in Thailand. The bamboo species were intensively collected from all regions of Thailand, and also collected from neighboring countries mainly Malaysia, Myanmar, southern China including Taiwan, and Laos. Bamboos were further obtained from most other Asian countries, and a few from Australia, Africa, and the Americas. Over the years, all these bamboos will be propagated and offered for sale. Depending on species, they are useful for numerous purposes, e.g. for commercial timber, shoot, paper pulp, and biomass production, for making handicrafts, basketry, furniture, house and garden tools, for house and bridge constructions, as ornamental garden plants, for hedges and screening, windbreak, landscaping, ecological planting and erosion control. We share our knowledge and provide any bamboo-related information to visitors and customers.

We sell bamboo plants: Usually potted bamboo divisions, but also cuttings, marcottings, seedlings, and field-grown bamboos. We also send bamboos, both living plants and seeds, nationwide as well as to worldwide destinations. We serve to retail and wholesale customers.

All enterprises are run by Khun Thammarat (Mr. Thammarat Boonthammee) from Chiang Mai, assisted by his staff, and by farmers in northern Thailand under contract or in cooperation.
